Course Introduction

Shek O Country Club is strictly members and their guests and it’s one of the nicest golf experiences in Hong Kong. It’s a very short layout with the front nine set overlooking the ocean and the back nine winding its way around a very tranquil and peaceful valley making for a very nice golf day out indeed. If you can somehow get an invite here, it’s not spectacular, but it’s a very, very nice golf experience in Hong Kong. The clubhouse is small and very unpretencious, the staff are nice and it’s not as “toffee nose” as The Hong Kong Golf Club. It’s located on the South East side of the Island where the roads get narrow and windy so it’ll take a while to get out there, especially during peak times.
The holes at Shek O Country Club are good but it lacks any signature hole. The Par 3 first is a long Par 3 down the hill where a big number can easily be made. The second is a much longer Par 3 up the hill requiring a fairway wood and even driver for many players. There’s a few excellent short Par 4’s but again, nothing absolutely brilliant.  The good thing is you can have a go at some of the par 4’s and there are some great risk-reward holes that you can try your luck reaching in one. A few hole in ones have been at Shek O Country Club on the Par 4’s.  It has one of the best Par 3’s in Hong Kong and Shek O Country Club is definitely a place to play if you ever get invited.
What we like is the casual, unhurried atmosphere and laid back private club atmosphere. Don’t expect to get on the membership list unless your’re a who’s who in Hong Kong or know someone who drives more than one Bentley, but if you’re realy wanting to play as many golf courses in Hong Kong as you can, try and get out to Shek O Country Club. There are no golf carts here but you can hire a caddie, and if the member asks, say yes. It’s history goes right back to 1919 making it one of the oldest courses in Hong Kong and in fact in Asia.
If you want to get a peak of Shek O Country Club and how the other half live, walk to the top of Dragon’s Back, one of Hong Kong’s most famous hikes. It’s an easy walk up the hill and the views are spectacular.
Shek O Country Club is almost a must-play, presuming you can get an invite from a member.
