Course Introduction
The Banff Springs Golf Club is one of the most scenic golf courses in the world, and its hallowed fairways are a mecca for club members and a paradise for travelling golfers fortunate enough to experience the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course's fusion of natural beauty and traditional culture.
Opened in 1911, Banff Springs Golf Course began as a nine-hole course designed by Bill Thomson, a Scottish expatriate who apprenticed under Old Tom Morris in St. Andrews, and was expanded to an 18-hole course by Donald Ross in 1924. But it was Stanley Thompson, Canada's most famous and successful golf course architect, who actually designed the layout that exists today. The course reflects his appreciation for traditional links golf courses while emphasising the subtleties of the mountainous landscape. Money was no obstacle; Banff Springs Golf Course, unveiled in 1928, is the most expensive course ever built. Thompson's layout borrows some holes from Ross, but also includes some stunning new holes - none more iconic than Devil's Cauldron, a short par-3 that straddles a glacial lake and sits at the base of steep Mount Rundle. Devil's Cauldron is one of the most scenic holes in the golfing world.
