Course Introduction
The new course, like the old, is open moorland and is an excellent championship course in its own right. It opened in 1907 as a nine-hole layout and was expanded to eighteen holes in 1913. The new course measures 7,199 yards from the back tees and 6,648 yards from the medal area and has been ranked among the 50 best courses in Britain and Ireland for over a decade. This is a serious golf course.
The new course really starts to show its strengths on the third hole. The heather comes into play and the holes become progressively more challenging, with the par 4‘s on the back nine averaging longer than the par 4’s on the old course. The back nine does not offer the ‘relief’ of a par 3 after the tenth hole, but a fine set of par 4s and par 5s, including a par 37. The final nine holes - the 16th, 17th and 18th - are a testing combination of one par 5 and two par 4s, which have very different characteristics but all require precision driving.
