Course Introduction
The Dunes Golf Course runs through sand dunes hundreds of metres from the coast of the Mornington Peninsula. The nearest towns are Blairgowrie, Rosebud and Sorrento, which lie at the southernmost tip of the peninsula. Architect Tony Cashmore has created a championship style course suitable for public play. It is neither too long, nor too narrow, nor too difficult to put off the average player, yet it is attractive enough to appeal to single handicap players.
The course's two nines are in a concentric clockwise loop, so the winds vary considerably during play. The emphasis is on novelty and variety, so the course requires golfers to make multiple changes of direction, responding to lieouts on the hillside and teeing off to the hilltop green.
For example, the par threes are very different from each other: the 124 metre 3rd is very susceptible to the breeze and faces a long kidney shaped green that slopes significantly to the back; the 6th is a very long downhill fairway where the best strategy may be to land short; the 160 metre 13th requires precision shots to stabilise on a fairly narrow and bunkered surface with significant forward slope; and finally, the 179 metre 13th requires a very good approach shot to a fairly narrow and bunkered surface with significant forward slope. The 160-metre 13th requires precision shots to hold the rather narrow and bunkered surface with a pronounced forward slope; and finally, the 179-metre 17th embodies the essence of the Sand Belt, a raised, complex, bunker-riddled green structure that needs to be hit hard into the prevailing breeze.
