Course Introduction
The Open is a championship course built for national competition, where the Australian Open is held every few years on a rotating basis. With long back tees, par fours, narrow fairways and undulating greens, this course is a real test for professionals.
The course is 6,783 metres long, so it's more than just a leisurely stroll in the great outdoors. It is a formidable and intense test of a golfer's ability, one that even the top pros experience only occasionally. In terms of difficulty, I would estimate that a nearly golfer would need an extra eight strokes to shoot net par, but the course is highly flexible. Depending on the tees selected, the course can be played at many different lengths.
In addition to the favourable natural contours, the site boasts an ever-present wind, which varies in direction and strength, which enhances its attributes. There is no particularly favourable direction to the planning arrangements and wind direction is always a factor.
The featured hole on the front nine is the 184-yard, par-3 7th, which sits at the highest point on the course, where side winds can be a serious impediment to a three-putt on the scorecard. The round finishes with a massive 640-yard par 5 with no less than 11 bunkers along the length of the hole designed to keep golfers on their toes until the end of the round.
