Course Introduction
The Club is home to Australia's first private Nicklaus-designed golf course, St John, which opened in 2001. The 18-hole championship course is situated in the scenic Yarra Valley just outside Melbourne, with gently rolling terrain and plenty of water to make it both fun and dangerous.
The course is an American parkland style course with wide fairways and fine greens, with St John's specially designed bunkers skilfully guiding the player through the well-manicured greens. Strategically placed slopes, mounds and traps make each hole a unique exploration.
The 407-yard, par-4 8th hole is considered the toughest hole on the entire course. After a tee shot through a slope of trees, the fairway slopes from right to left, so close shots can be hit off the feet. There are bunkers on both sides of the green and only one narrow entrance, so the luxury of two-putting for par may not be one that many golfers enjoy.
On the back nine, many consider the 180-yard, par-3 11th to be the best hole. Water comes into play on the right and a quarry on the left. The green surface is nearly 40 yards long, so club selection is critical to hit the ball close enough to at least make par.
