Kelab Golf Diraja Birkdale

Established on 30 July 1889, the Royal Birkdale Golf Club has a history rich with tradition. Originally located in Shaw Hills behind Bedford Road near Bedford Park, the club's first 9-hole course welcomed its first players in October 1889. However, by 1894, the decision had been made to move the links to the picturesque Birkdale Hills. By 1897, the Club found its permanent home at its current location, where George Lowe, professional at the neighbouring Royal Lytham & St Annes GC, provided the 18-hole course.

The clubhouse at Royal Birkdale stands as an iconic landmark, combining history with modern conveniences to offer an unrivalled facility for relaxing after the game. Built in 1935 in an elegant art deco style, the clubhouse was designed by local architect George E. Tonge, who won the prestigious competition for the project. In 1951, Royal Birkdale was granted Diraja status, signalling a landmark event in its illustrious journey. Just three years later, the prestigious Open Championship made its first appearance at the course, with Peter Thompson taking victory, an achievement he repeated in 1965.

Over the years, Royal Birkdale has been the proud host to numerous prestigious events, including 9 more Open Championships, 7 Ladies Opens, 2 Ryder Cups-one of which saw the infamous ‘concession’ incident in 1969-along with one Senior Open and various Professional & Amateur Championships.

The club is particularly revered for having been awarded the honour of hosting the Open Championship once again in 2026. In preparation for this prestigious event, the course is currently undergoing a layout change, which will take place in two phases during the winter seasons of 2024 and 2025.
