Course Introduction
Originally built in 1856, the course has been redesigned over the years by the likes of Old Tom Morris, Ben Sayers and James Braid.
An architectural gem of a golf course, it has hosted numerous national and international championships. It was the final qualifying venue for the British Open at Muirfield. The British Men's Championship, the Scottish Amateur Championship, the Scottish PGA Championship, the Scottish Men's Championship, the British Women's Championship and the Women's Domestic and International Championships have all been held here.
The first two holes on the Dunbar course go back and forth through an ancient deer park on flat, plain, yet parkland-like terrain. The second green was once a feeding ground for the deer. The third green has an interesting story, it is a par 3 and is known as ‘Jackson's Penny’. Mr Jackson, a retired local businessman, used to sit behind the green in the 1920s and reward good shots on the hole with a penny, which in those days was a lot of money. The fourth hole is a beautiful par four, known as ‘The Shore’, and Dunbar begins to resemble a classic links course, with views opening up and the wind becoming more pronounced. The next thirteen holes are sandwiched between the coastline and a beautiful old stone wall, beyond which lies the out-of-bounds area. The final hole, aptly called ‘The Ham’, plays through the old deer park back to the clubhouse.
The course is relatively short at 6,597 yards from the medal tees, but the wind is strong, making the game both challenging and highly entertaining. The East Lothian area is rich in history and a trip to Dunbar will round off the journey.
