Course Introduction
The Royal Dublin Golf Club is located on Bull Island in Dublin Bay. The island was formed in the early 1800's after the construction of the seawall. The end result is a perfect sandy island with excellent golf course terrain and a wealth of flora and fauna. Bulls Island is the only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located in the capital city.
The club was founded in 1885. The Club moved twice before finally relocating to Bull Island in 1889. Two years later, Queen Victoria granted the club Royal Patronage. The course was badly damaged during the First World War and was rebuilt by Harry Colt in 1920.
It is a classic traditional ‘Scottish’ back-and-forth course, a relative rarity among Irish courses! It is highly regarded by professional players. The course is flat and narrow, with long stretches of out of bounds, requiring accurate tee shots. The wind tends to swirl around Dublin Bay, which usually makes the back nine more difficult to play. The greens are excellent, and there are some deep, unforgiving greenside bunkers; the fairway bunkers are equally difficult to play.
Royal Dublin has hosted a number of professional tournaments and has hosted several Irish Opens, with Ballesteros and Langer among the winners. But the most favoured winner at Royal Dublin is undoubtedly Christy O'Connor, who won the Irish Open here in 1966.
