Course Introduction
Cullen Hills Golf Club was founded in 1976 as Sunshine Coast Beach Golf Course and operated as a 9-hole course, but in 1992, nine holes were added to the course and the club was renamed Cullen Hills.
Today, the course stretches 5,900 metres from the championship tees, has a par of 72 and is designed as two nine-hole courses. The Maroochy River runs through the course and holes 4 to 6 lie in a small triangle on the east side of the river. The scorecard shows that half of the holes are associated with water, which usually comes in the form of small ponds and lakes.
Interestingly, after the first three par 4s, there were no more consecutive identical pars for the rest of the round - the back nine consisted of four par 3s and four par 5s. The only par four in the inner half of the field is located on the short par four 18th hole, where the tee shot passes over an ornamental pond before the attacking fairway drops to a staggered home green.
Highlight holes include the par 3s on the front nine at No. 5 and No. 8, and the dogleg par 4 No. 9, which plays slightly to the left. The shortest par 5 on the back nine may not look like much of a problem on the scorecard, but the fairway makes a sharp turn behind a lake on the right to a green protected by thick sand and gravel, so expectations for birdie here should be tempered.
