Course Introduction
Set within a 95-acre property alongside the saltwater Hays Inlet, the 18-hole course at Redcliffe Golf Club was first laid out by Stan Francis in 1935, though the club itself is a good bit younger, dating back only as far as 1960.
The original golf club that occupied the property was Peninsula Country Golf Club, with Brisbane Lord Mayor W.A. Jolly and Sir Edward Macartney as members of the first management committee. Unfortunately, twenty years after its formation, the club encountered financial difficulties in the mid-1950s.
Royal Queensland and Peninsula Country Golf Club agreed at that time to amalgamate but those plans fell through as the Peninsula Club foundered, allowing a new club to emerge with Sir Manuel Hornibrook as its first Patron. Royal Queensland, which had taken over the Peninsula debts, allowed the new club fixed tee times, giving it a foot hold on the property.
A 10-year lease was agreed in 1966, then a new 25-year lease was signed in 1971. Nine years later, Royal Queensland agreed to sell the course to Redcliffe and in 1984 a final payment was made to complete the purchase. A year later, when the club marked its silver anniversary, a range of course improvements (including new 9th and 10th holes) were concluded.
